Family history work, via priesthood ordinances and temple work, is an essential part of God’s plan for the redemption of man. Genealogy turns the hearts of the children to the fathers and the fathers to the children, uniting the human race and making it possible for all to be together with God in the celestial kingdom.  We literally become saviors on Mt. Zion for our family with genealogy and temple work. Family history work allows us to appreciate and remember our ancestors and develop a connection with the past that is frequently otherwise lost. Many or perhaps most ex-believers might appreciate great value in learning about and from our ancestors. Indeed, it can be argued that one of the church’s greatest public services to the world is the tremendous contribution and facilitation of genealogical research.

There is a lot of guilt and shame associated with genealogy, adding one more task to the already overburdened schedule of a believer.	There is a lot of guilt and shame associated with genealogy. This is unfortunate. To the ex-believer, the church is taking something that is naturally good and interesting and valuable and turning it into a burden.
