Knowing you are a child of God means that you have endless potential. Knowing that you can become just like God and Christ can give you great self-esteem. God the Father watches over us, fills our hearts with breathtaking joy. Many testimonies are found by praying to God the Father and feeling his love towards us as his children. Knowing that we are literally God’s children is often one of the most cherished pearls for believing Mormons.
This belief also helps us have more love towards other people since everyone is literally our brothers and sisters.

Some ex-believing Mormons regret not being able to believe they are a child of God anymore. This belief was comforting to some and brought joy: Believing you are a child of God means that you have endless potential , believing that you can become just like God and Christ can give you great self esteem. God the Father watches over us, fills our hearts with breathtaking joy.
The ex-believer might also admit that this belief might help us have more love towards other people since everyone is literally our brothers and sisters. Indeed, some ex-believers find that they have less motivation to care about other people when they leave faith behind (even as other ex-believers feel they can care more and serve because they want to, not because they are supposed to or because they need to be an example).

The ex-believer might see this doctrine as damaging in that it promotes an egocentric view with disregard to other species / the environment. Yes, everything on Earth is God’s creation, but only we are created in God’s image, and thus are more special than all other species. The ex-believer is also more likely to see inherent racism in this doctrine, because God is portrayed as white. If we are made in God’s image, but we don’t look like God, are we really his children? What is wrong with us?
